There's just something so charming about bullfinches, not only are they beautiful - they are also full of surprises.
 
Whilst their gentle song is perhaps a little underwhelming to our ear, male bullfinches have an incredible capacity to memorise and perform a tune.
 
In the 19th century, German foresters would teach young bullfinches to repeat whistled tunes, which they would do with perfect clarity. They could then sell these bullfinches at a high price as entertaining companions who would be able to sing this tune for the rest of their lives.
